John Frieda Beach Blonde Ocean Waves Sea Spray

JF

This was by far my favorite beach waves hair spray that I’ve ever tried and used.  Why this product was discontinued I will never know or understand :(

This spray had the most amazing smell.  I remember anytime I used it people around me would constantly ask me what I was wearing that smelled so good.  It didn’t just smell good – it worked!

This product gave me beautiful beachy hair without feeling gross, dirty and like there was a pound of product build up on my hair.  It also added shine to it and didn’t dull out my hair (like the bumble and bumble surf spray does to me).

Oh how I wish this would return…..I would buy it in bulk!

Pros:

  • Smells amazing
  • Gives hair beachy waves
  • Adds shine
  • Doesn’t dry out hair
  • Doesn’t weigh down hair

Cons:

  • Discontinued

  1. Did you ever contact the company to bring it back? There was a recent story in the New York Times that mentioned this product and how people still talk about it!

    • Hi there! No, I did not ever try that but it’s a great idea! Thank you for providing me with the link and bringing it to my attention….i’ll definitely reach out to the company. I would LOVE for this product to come back :)

      • I’ve experimented with homemade versions, but you still can’t duplicate the scent, which even my husband commented he really liked when I used it. Beach waves are back big time, so I hope enough people ask for it to return. As the NYT story mentioned, people pay up to $50 for this very product on eBay since it’s discontinued, so there’s a market for it. Maybe you could encourage people to ask for it since you have an audience. I would love to see it again, too. I think I dumped out an old bottle I had earlier this year when I was cleaning out my cabinet, thinking I could buy a fresh bottle. Imagine my disappointment when I found out it was discontinued!

  2. This was MY favorite product too! Ever! I would buy 3 bottles at a time so luckily when it discontinued I had a couple to sustain me for awhile. I have naturally curly/wavy hair and this product made those curls and waves like no other!! The look, texture, smell..! Perfect. I will never understand it either. I have tried many many different products to find a match and I can’t find anything even close. I DID contact the company with a very sad and upset email. I was replied back to with another of their products they recommended in place of it..I bought it and it was terrible. It’s not even sold anymore either. I used JF sea spray for years and years. My heart was broken! I still scour the Internet after all these years in hopes of finding another like it or something saying it will be brought back! :-(

    • That’s how I feel :(

I feel like there are a lot of other products out there on the market that claim to do the same thing that this one did but in reality they don’t compare to it. This was an all around winner. It actually did what it said it did and the smell was amazing. I am still not sure why they got rid of it in the first place because it seems like it’s a favorite for many.

  3. I, too, was obsessed with this product. I have about 1/4 cup left in my last bottle and it makes me so sad. Still don’t understand why they ever stopped making it. I have bought and tried every other sea spray and they were all horrible in comparison, so greasy or crunchy. Today, though, I may have found a decent substitute, so I am really excited. Marc Anthony’s Dream Waves Beach Spray. Definitely still not as amazing as the old JF Ocean Waves, but really really close! Smells really similar as well, with that coconutty suntan lotion smell, but maybe just a little sweeter. And at least for my hair, the waves and texture that it produced were almost identical to the JF Ocean Waves. Finally! A worthy substitute!

    • Thank you so much for sharing about the Marc Anthony Dream Waves beach spray! I haven’t tried it yet but definitely need too if the results are similar to what the JF one produced. I also love that the smell is similar! (That was something that I really loved about the JF spray). I find that a lot of the beach waves sprays available today do make your hair either super greasy or super crunchy/knotty. They also don’t smell very good which really is a let down. We can all only hope that maybe one day by some miracle JF will reintroduce this product. (A girl can dream……)

    • Thank you for mentioning the Marc Anthony substitute. I will definitely look into that. When I emailed the company that made the John Frieda Ocean Waves, they said they discontinued it in Nov. 2005 b/c of declining sales, due partly to the fact that stores lost interest in carrying it since it was kind of a seasonal product. I wish everyone would email them to urge them to bring it back. The fact that it got a mention in the NYT just a couple of months ago, 8 years after being discontinued, should tell them something!
