DIY – Homemade Body Scrub Recipes

body scrub

Body scrubs are great!  They leave skin feeling fresh and smooth as well as healthy and glowing by exfoliating off old layers of dead skin.  (They are also a must before applying sunless tanner or getting a spray tan.)  However, sometimes you just don’t have the money to buy one or just don’t have one on hand to use when you need a good scrub.  No worries….you can make your own body scrub using any one of these amazing recipes below with ingrediants that you most likely already have stashed in your kitchen pantry.

Below is a collection of body scrub recipes that I have found while scouring the web….enjoy!

Just remember the consistency of your scrub should be not too oily/runny but it also shouldn’t be dry/crumbly…you want to find that “happy medium” between the two.  Also, you can always adjust any of these recipes to better suit your needs and preferences.  If your scrub is too oily/runny just add some more sugar or salt.  If your scrub is too dry, add some more oil.

    • Hi Siobhan!

Most of the d.i.y. body scrub recipes have a shelf life of right around 6 months. You want to be sure to store them in an airtight container though in order for them to keep. A lot of times the mixtures will settle over time and may show some signs of separation so just advise the recipient to stir the mixture prior to using it. (These make great gifts!)

  6. I love these and would like to make as gifts. Do you know of any stores or online places that sell the bowls with the spoons. Any help would be great

    • These make excellent gifts Sherri!

I would look at your local craft store. They most likely will have the jars and the spoons. (Most likely you will have to purchase them separately though. I’ve never seen them sold together as a pair.) If you don’t have a local craft store there are plenty online. (Such as michaels.com). Good luck :)

  7. Hi, I’m kind of a newbie here in the world of homemade body scrubs stuffs. So, I’m wondering how big is the cup that you used to measure the ingredients? For example, the first one, the Ultimate Sea Salt Scrub. It says there to use 1 cup course seal salt & 1/2 cup baby oil.
Is it the normal everyday cup you used to drink your coffee/tea? Or some other kind of cup?
(I feel so stupid for asking this kind of question…but… I don’t care.) Haha… ^_^
    Thanks for posting this up!
I plan to use this recipes to give my mum a homemade spa-treatment soon.

    • Alin,
Don’t feel stupid for asking what you asked, it’s a great question! I personally just use kitchen measuring cups from my kitchen when I mix up one of these recipes. But, a lot of times, I find that a lot of these measurements don’t need to be exact because you can adjust them to suit your needs. Sometimes I like my scrub to be a bit more grainy so i’ll add extra sugar or salt to the mix. So really, you could get away with using a cup or bowl instead of a specific measuring cup. Have fun making these recipes and I hope your mum has a wonderful spa day treatment!

      • In case Alin is not American: a cup is a measuring unit used in America (and possibly elsewhere?). It is equivalent to about 250 ml, but you can find lots of converters online to get the exact measure in whatever unit you are used to using.

  8. Lemon is too acidic to be incorporated into a scrub. It will not only leave you with white patches on your skin but also irritate and burn if you have open wounds. Not a good idea, you want to be able to have a “glow” so instead, use coffee or cocoa powder.

    Like

    • Jamila, thank you for your input and suggestion. I agree that you want to glow rather than be patchy. I also agree that this could cause burning and irritation to a wound. I wouldn’t suggest using any scrub on a wound or sore as I imagine any of them would cause further irritation.

    • Hi Kajal,

Thank you for pointing this out!! You are 100% correct, the word “coarse” should have been used in place of the word “course”. I probably spent too much time staring at the screen and neglected to notice this :(

  17. I like the recipes, but when I tried one I found I ended up standing in a DANGEROUSLY slippery tub. Scary. I had to crawl out and grab a sponge and cleaner before I could continue my shower. Be careful, ladies!

    Like

    • Erin,

That’s a really great point you made about the tub getting slippery. Everyone should use caution when using these scrubs in the shower/tub because the oil has the ability to make the area you are standing on slippery and the more oil you use, the more slippery it can get. I would suggest placing a rubber bathtub mat/pad on the floor of the shower/tub as this normally helps some. (Just remember to lift up the mat after you get out and rinse under it so the scrub doesn’t get stuck under there leaving a mess). Thanks for pointing this out!

  18. I have a question on the wake me up scrub, when you said fresh coffee grounds you mean coffee grounds straight from the can? I know this may sound silly, but I am just trying to get clarification. Thanks.

    • Hi Shawnna,

I have actually used both fresh coffee grinds after making a pot of coffee as well as coffee grinds out of a can/bag. I personally like the coffee grinds out of the can/bag better because they are a little more “gritty” and I prefer a more gritty scrub.

  19. I was wondering with the brown sugar scrub can you sub veg oil for the olive oil? I do not keep olive oil on hand because of the price.
    Thanks,

Roughly how much do these recipes make? I was hoping to make it and store it, but need to purchase a jar of sorts, don’t want to get something too big or too small (although I might want to make a bigger batch of some :D i’m not really a petite woman haha)

I LOVE the pictures, you have one creative mind! <3

      • Hi Claudia!

Yes, a lot of the scrubs can be stored for up to months at a time if properly stored. Some of the d.i.y. treatments don’t last long and can’t be stored for long because of the ingredients. I’m hoping to do a post in the near future addressing the shelf life times of different d.i.y. beauty treatments. Most of the scrubs yield between 1 and 2 cups but it all depends how much you adjust the ingredients to make it to your liking. Please feel free to share any of the ones you try and how you like them :)
